Dolley Madison 1768-1849.



Dolley Madison was born in the year 1768. She was the third child out of three children. Her older siblings were both boys, named Walter and William. When she was nine months old she moved back to her home state Virginia.

Dolley Madison had a first marriage to a man who died by yellow fever. She married James Madison in 1794. When he became president she became first lady.

When Dolley Madison was in the White House her husband declared war on England. So he set off to check the forces that were coming to protect the United States capital. Before he left Madison told Dolley to go to Virginia but she would not go. She said that she would go when it was time to go. When the British came to destroy the capital Dolley Madison saved a famous painting of George Washington and some important documents for the United States. After she left, the British broke into the White House. They looked for something valuable but found nothing but a hot dinner on the table so they ate dinner and burned the White House. A new White House was built. With the help of Dolley Madison, Washington D,C, became a shining new city.

Soon after Dolley Madison died it was the year 1849 she had lived 91 unforgettable years.
